Foton
Un foton este o particulă elementară, cuantumul luminii și toate celelalte forme de radiație electromagnetică și purtătorul de forță al forței electromagnetice, chiar și atunci când este static prin intermediul fotonilor virtuali. Efectele acestei forțe sunt ușor de observat atât la nivel microscopic, cât și la nivel macroscopic, deoarece fotonul are o masă de repaus zero; acest lucru permite interacțiunile pe distanțe lungi. Ca toate particulele elementare, fotonii sunt în prezent cel mai bine explicați prin mecanica cuantică și prezintă dualitatea cu undă-particulă, care prezintă proprietăți ale undelor și ale particulelor. De exemplu, un singur foton poate fi refracționat de o lentilă sau poate prezenta interferențe cu valurile în sine, dar, de asemenea, acționează ca o particulă care dă un rezultat precis atunci când se măsoară poziția sa.
