Braconajul a fost în mod tradițional definită ca vânătoarea, uciderea sau capturarea ilegală a animalelor sălbatice, asociate de regulă cu drepturile de utilizare a terenurilor. Până în secolul al XX-lea, țăranii săraci, în cea mai mare parte, s-au sacrificat în scopuri de subzistență, completând astfel o dietă rară. Prin contrast, furtul de animale domestice, cum ar fi bovinele, este considerat furt, nu braconaj. Din anii 1980, termenul de braconaj a fost folosit și pentru recoltarea ilegală a speciilor de plante sălbatice. În 1998, cercetătorii de mediu de la Universitatea din Massachusetts Amherst au propus conceptul de braconaj drept o crimă de mediu, definind orice activitate ilegală care contravine legilor și reglementărilor stabilite pentru protejarea resurselor naturale regenerabile, inclusiv recoltarea ilegală a faunei sălbatice cu intenția de a poseda, transportul, consumarea sau vânzarea acestuia și utilizarea părților sale corporale. Ei consideră că braconajul este una dintre cele mai grave amenințări la adresa supraviețuirii populațiilor de plante și animale.
