Pretenția este dreptul Coroanei de a avea bunuri și servicii de rechizite pentru uzul regal și a fost dezvoltat în Anglia pe parcursul secolului al Xl-lea până în secolul al XIV-lea. Teoretic, prerogativele regelui i-au permis să colecteze bunuri necesare atât pentru uz casnic, cât și pentru cele militare, dar acesta a fost întrerupt în 1362. Problema principală a sistemului a fost aceea că era deschisă abuzurilor din partea oficialilor corupți, să le vândă pentru profit sau să folosească extorcarea și alte mijloace pentru a obține articole sau bani care nu au fost transmise sau divulgate regelui. În consecință, regii englezi au stabilit statute numeroase, deși puțin ineficace, în încercarea de a limita corupția. Când Edward I și Armata Engleză au invadat Scoția, cu puțină productivitate agricolă, au folosit bunuri. Curtea engleză a avut, în vechime, un drept de cumpărare obișnuită de hrană pentru săraci. Dreptul a fost numit premiu. Edward a luat acest lucru și l-a extins grosolan pentru a face instituția numită purtare. Șerifii ar cumpăra mâncare la un preț stabilit, iar vânzătorii ar fi trebuit să vândă la prețul guvernului.
