Probabilitatea este o măsură a probabilității ca un eveniment să se producă. Probabilitatea este folosită pentru a cuantifica o atitudine a minții față de o anumită propoziție a cărui adevăr nu suntem siguri. Propunerea de interes este de obicei sub forma "Va apare un eveniment specific?" Atitudinea minții este de forma "Cât de sigur suntem că evenimentul va avea loc?" Siguranța pe care o adoptăm poate fi descrisă în termeni de măsură numerică și acest număr, între 0 și 1, numim probabilitate. Astfel, cu cât este mai mare probabilitatea unui eveniment, cu atât mai sigur suntem că evenimentul va avea loc. Un exemplu simplu ar fi aruncarea unei monede echitabile. Deoarece cele două rezultate sunt considerate echivalente, probabilitatea de "capete" este egală cu probabilitatea de "cozile" și fiecare probabilitate este de 1/2 sau echivalentul a 50% șanse de "capete" sau "cozi". Aceste concepte au primit o formalizare matematică axiomatică în teoria probabilităților, care este utilizată pe scară largă în domenii de studiu cum ar fi matematica, statisticile, finanțele, jocurile de noroc, știința, inteligența artificială / învățarea mașinilor, informatica și filosofia, de exemplu, cu privire la frecvența preconizată a evenimentelor.
