Pseudocopulation
Pseudocopularea descrie comportamente similare copulației care servesc o funcție de reproducere pentru unul sau ambii participanți, dar nu implică uniune sexuală reală între indivizi. Acesta este cel mai general aplicat unui polen care încearcă să coopereze cu o floare. Unele flori imită vizual potențialul partener de sex feminin, dar stimulii cheie sunt adesea chimici și tactili. Această formă de mimică în plante se numește mimicrie pouyanniană. Orhideele realizează în mod obișnuit reproducerea în acest mod, secreind substanțe chimice de la glande numite osmofori localizați în sepale, petale sau labelum, care nu pot fi deosebite de feromonii naturali ai insectelor. Polenizatorul are apoi un polliniu atașat corpului său, pe care îl transferă la stigmatul unei alte flori atunci când încearcă o altă "copulare". Polenizatoarele sunt adesea albine și viespe de ordinul Hymenoptera și zboară. Costurile pentru insectele polenizante ar putea fi văzute ca fiind neglijabile, însă studiul pollinatoarelor Cryptostylis arată că pot să degradeze cantități mari de spermatozoizi prin ejacularea pe floare.
