Puffball
Un puffball este un membru al oricărui grup de ciuperci din divizia Basidiomycota. Pufulețele au fost tratate anterior ca un grup taxonomic numit Gasteromycetes sau Gasteromycetidae, dar acum sunt cunoscute ca fiind o asamblare polifiletic. Trăsătura distinctivă a tuturor puffballs este că acestea nu au un capac deschis cu branhii care poartă sporii. În schimb, sporii sunt produși pe plan intern, într-un corp fructos sferic, numit gazteroteniu (gazterioid ("stomac-like") basidiocarp). Întrucât sporii devin maturi, ele formează o masă numită gleba în centrul corpului fructat, care are adesea o culoare și o textura distinctivă. Basidiocarpul rămâne închis până când sporii au fost eliberați din bazidia. În cele din urmă, ea dezvoltă o diafragmă, sau se usucă, devine fragilă, se desparte și sporii scapă. Sporii de puffballs sunt mai degrabă statismospores decât balistică, ceea ce înseamnă că nu sunt împușcați activ din bazidiu. Ciupercile se numesc "puffballs", deoarece norii de spori de praf maronii sunt emise atunci când corpul fructului maturat se sparge sau ca răspuns la impactul cum ar fi cel al picăturilor de ploaie care se încadrează.
