Piroxenii reprezintă un grup de minerale inosilice formate de roci importante, găsite în multe roci igne și metamorfice. Aceștia au o structură comună formată din lanțuri simple de tetraedru de silice și cristalizează în sistemele monoclinice și ortorombice. Pyroxenii au formula generală XY (Si, Al) 206 (unde X reprezintă calciu, sodiu, fier + 2 și magneziu și mai rar zinc, mangan și litiu și Y reprezintă ioni de dimensiuni mai mici, cum ar fi cromul, , magneziu, mangan, scandiu, titan, vanadiu și chiar fier + 2). Deși aluminiul înlocuiește extensiv siliciul în silicați, cum ar fi feldspați și amfibule, substituția are loc doar într-o măsură limitată în majoritatea piroxenelor. Numele de piroxen provine din cuvintele grecești despre foc (πυρ) și străin (ξένος). Piroxenii au fost numiți în acest fel datorită prezenței lor în lavă vulcanică, unde sunt uneori văzute ca cristale încorporate în sticlă vulcanică; se presupune că acestea erau impurități în pahar, de unde și numele de "străini de foc".
