Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, cunoscut mai mult ca Raphael, a fost pictor italian și arhitect al Renașterii înalte. Opera sa este admirată pentru claritatea sa de formă și ușurință a compoziției și pentru realizarea vizuală a idealului neoplatonic al măreției omenești. Împreună cu Michelangelo și Leonardo da Vinci, el formează trinitatea tradițională a marilor maeștri din acea perioadă. Raphael a fost extrem de productiv, a condus un atelier neobișnuit de mare și, în ciuda morții sale la 37 de ani, lăsând un volum mare de muncă. Multe dintre lucrările sale se găsesc în Palatul Vaticanului, unde frescoatele Camere Raphael erau centrul și cea mai mare lucrare din cariera sa. Cea mai cunoscută lucrare este Școala din Atena din Vaticanul Stanza della Segnatura. După primii ani de la Roma, o mare parte din lucrarea sa a fost executată de atelierul său din desenele sale, cu o pierdere considerabilă de calitate. El a avut o influență extrem de importantă în viața sa, deși în afara Romei, munca sa a fost cunoscută în cea mai mare parte din realizările sale de colaborare.
