Romulus / rɒmjʉləs / și Remus / riːməs / sunt frații gemeni și personajele centrale ale mitului fondării Romei. Mama lor este Rhea Silvia, fiica lui Numitor, regele Albei Longa. Înainte de concepție, fratele numelui Amulius se ocupă de moștenire, ucide moștenitorii de sex masculin ai lui Numitor și îi obligă pe Rhea Silvia să devină o Fecioară din Vest, jurată castității. Rhea Silvia concepe gemenii de către zeul Marte, sau de demul-Hercule. Odată ce s-au născut gemenii, Amulius le-a abandonat să moară în râul Tiber. Ele sunt salvate printr-o serie de intervenții miraculoase: râul le duce la siguranță, un lup-le găsește și le alăptează și un ciocănitoare le hrănește. Un păstor și soția lui îi găsesc și îi încurajează la bărbat, ca păstori simpli. Gemenii, încă ignoranți ai adevăratei lor origini, se dovedesc a fi lideri naturali. Fiecare dobândește mulți adepți. Când descoperă adevărul nașterii lor, îl ucid pe Amulius și îl restaurează pe tronul lui Numitor. Mai degrabă decât să aștepte să moștenească Alba Longa, ei aleg să înființeze un oraș nou. Romulus dorește să găsească noul oraș de pe Dealul Palatului; Remus preferă Dealul Aventine.
