Samos
Samos este o insula greceasca in estul Mării Egee, la sud de Chios, la nord de Patmos și Dodecanese, și în largul coastei Mării Asiei, de unde este separată de Strâmtoarea Mycale de 1,6 kilometri. Este, de asemenea, o unitate regională separată din regiunea Egee de Nord și singura localitate a unității regionale. În cele mai vechi timpuri, Samos era un oraș-stat deosebit de bogat și puternic, cunoscut în special pentru podgoriile și producția de vin. Acasă este Pitagoreion și Heraion din Samos, un sit al Patrimoniului Mondial UNESCO care include apeductul Eupalinian, o minune a ingineriei vechi. Samos este locul de nastere al filosofului grec si al matematicianului Pythagoras, dupa care este numit teorema pitagora, filozoful Epicurus, si astronomul Aristarh de Samos, primul cunoscut care propune ca Pamantul sa se roteasca in jurul Soarelui. Vinul samian era bine cunoscut în antichitate și este încă produs pe insulă. Insula a fost guvernată de Principatul Samoos Autonome sub suzeranitatea otomană din 1835 până când a intrat în Grecia în 1912.
