Scriptorium, literal "loc pentru scriere", este folosit în mod obișnuit pentru a se referi la o cameră din mănăstirile medievale europene dedicate scriiturii, copierii și iluminării manuscriselor de către cărturarii monahali. Constatările scrise, clădirile supraviețuitoare și săpăturile arheologice arată totuși că, contrar credinței populare, astfel de încăperi rareori existau: cea mai mare scriere monahală se făcea în niște dulapuri asemănătoare cu cele din mănăstire sau în celulele călugărilor. Referințele din scrierile științifice moderne către "scriptoria" se referă mai degrabă la rezultatul colectiv scris al unei mănăstiri, mai degrabă decât la o cameră fizică. Un scriptoriu a fost un adjuvant necesar unei biblioteci; oriunde ar fi existat o bibliotecă, se poate presupune în mod obișnuit că există un scriptoriu. Scriptoria, în sensul convențional al unei încăperi rezervate scopului, a existat, probabil, numai pentru perioade limitate de timp, atunci când o instituție sau un individ dorea un număr mare de texte copiate pentru stocarea unei biblioteci; odată ce biblioteca era stocată, nu mai era nevoie de o cameră desemnată.
