Auto-advocacy se referă la mișcarea drepturilor civile pentru persoanele cu dizabilități de dezvoltare, denumite și dizabilități cognitive sau intelectuale și alte dizabilități. Este, de asemenea, un termen important în mișcarea privind drepturile persoanelor cu dizabilități, referindu-se la faptul că persoanele cu dizabilități își asumă controlul propriilor vieți, inclusiv responsabilitatea pentru îngrijirea proprie în sistemul medical. Persoanele cu dizabilități intelectuale sunt extrem de vulnerabile la abuz, datorită izolării lor sociale și fizice.
