Oţel
Oțelul este un aliaj de fier, cu carbon, care poate contribui până la 2,1% din greutatea sa. Carbonul, alte elemente și incluziunile din fier acționează ca agenți de întărire care împiedică mișcarea dislocațiilor care există în mod natural în laturile cristaline ale atomilor de fier. Variajul cantității de elemente de aliere, forma lor în oțel, fie ca elemente solute, fie ca faze precipitate, încetinește mișcarea acestor dislocări care fac din fier atât de ductil și atât de slab și astfel controlează calități cum ar fi duritatea, ductilitatea și rezistența la tracțiune a oțelului rezultat. Oțelul poate deveni mai puternic decât fierul pur, dar numai prin neglijarea ductilității, din care fierul are un exces. Deși oțelul a fost produs în cuptoare de bloomie de mii de ani, utilizarea oțelului sa extins considerabil după ce în secolul al XVII-lea au fost concepute metode de producție mai eficiente pentru oțelul blister și apoi pentru oțelul cu creuzet. Odată cu inventarea procesului Bessemer la mijlocul secolului al XIX-lea, a început o nouă eră de oțel în masă. Acesta a fost urmat de procesul Siemens-Martin și apoi de procesul Gilchrist-Thomas, care a îmbunătățit calitatea oțelului. Odată cu introducerea lor, oțelul ușor înlocuiește fierul forjat.

Prima definiție a oțelului în dicționar este oricare dintre aliajele pe bază de fier conținând carbon și adesea cantități mici de alte elemente cum ar fi fosfor, sulf, mangan, crom și nichel. Oțelurile prezintă o varietate de proprietăți, cum ar fi rezistența, prelucrabilitatea, maleabilitatea etc., în funcție de compoziția și modul în care au fost tratate. O altă definiție a oțelului este ceva fabricat din oțel. Oțelul este, de asemenea, un întăritor de oțel într-un corset etc.
