Un factor de stres este un agent chimic sau biologic, condiție de mediu, stimul extern sau un eveniment care provoacă stres unui organism. Un eveniment care declanșează răspunsul la stres poate include: ▪ factorii de stres de mediu ▪ evenimentele de stres zilnic ▪ schimbările de viață ▪ stresorii la locul de muncă ▪ stresul chimic ▪ stresul social Stresorii au răspunsuri fizice, chimice și mentale în interiorul corpului. Stresul fizic produce stres mecanic asupra pielii, oaselor, ligamentelor, tendoanelor, mușchilor și nervilor care cauzează deformarea țesuturilor și, în cazuri extreme, eșecul țesutului. Stresurile chimice produc, de asemenea, răspunsuri biomecanice asociate metabolismului și reparării țesuturilor. Stresorii fizici pot produce durere și pot afecta performanța muncii. Durerea cronică și tulburările care necesită îngrijiri medicale pot rezulta din stresurile fizice extreme sau dacă nu există suficient timp de recuperare între expunerile succesive. Stresorii pot afecta, de asemenea, funcțiile și performanțele mentale.
