Sumarea este operația de adăugare a unei secvențe de numere; rezultatul este suma sau totalul acestora. Dacă numerele sunt adăugate succesiv de la stânga la dreapta, orice rezultat intermediar este o sumă parțială, suma prefixelor sau suma totală de rulare a sumării. Numerele care urmează să fie însumate (numite addends sau uneori summands) pot fi numere întregi, numere raționale, numere reale sau numere complexe. Pe lângă numere, pot fi adăugate și alte tipuri de valori: vectori, matrici, polinoame și, în general, elemente ale oricărui grup aditiv (sau chiar monoid). Pentru secvențele finite ale unor astfel de elemente, sumarea întotdeauna produce o sumă bine definită (posibil în virtutea convenției pentru sume goale). Sumarea unei secvențe infinite de valori se numește o serie. O valoare a unei astfel de serii poate fi adesea definită printr-o limită (deși uneori valoarea poate fi infinită și de multe ori nici o valoare nu rezultă deloc). O altă noțiune care implică limite ale sumelor finite este integrarea. Termenul de sumare are un înțeles special referitor la extrapolare în contextul unor serii divergente. Sumarea secvenței este o expresie a cărei valoare este suma fiecărui membru al secvenței.

Prima definiție a sumelor din dicționar este rezultatul adăugării de numere, cantități, obiecte etc. O altă definiție a sumelor este cardinalitatea unirii seturilor disjuncte a căror cardinalități sunt numerele date. Suma este, de asemenea, una sau mai multe coloane sau rânduri de numere care urmează să fie adăugate, scăzute, înmulțite sau împărțite.
