Cauciucul sintetic, invariabil un polimer, este orice tip de elastomer artificial, sintetizat în principal din subproduse petroliere. Un elastomer este un material cu proprietăți mecanice care poate fi supus unei deformări elastice mult mai stricte decât majoritatea materialelor și se întoarce încă la dimensiunea anterioară fără deformare permanentă. Aproximativ 15 miliarde de kilograme de cauciuc sunt produse anual, iar din această cantitate două treimi sunt sintetice. Veniturile globale generate cu cauciuc sintetic sunt susceptibile de a crește până la aproximativ 56 miliarde USD în 2020. Cauciucul sintetic, cum ar fi cauciucul natural, utilizează în industria automobilelor anvelope, profile de uși și ferestre, furtunuri, curele, covorase, pardoseli și amortizoare.
