Talasemia este o formă de tulburări hematologice recesive autosomale moștenite care au originea în regiunea mediteraneeană. În talasemie, tulburarea este cauzată de slăbirea și distrugerea celulelor roșii din sânge. Talasemia este cauzată de gene variate sau care lipsesc care afectează modul în care organismul produce hemoglobină. Hemoglobina este proteina din celulele roșii care transportă oxigen. Persoanele cu talasemie fac mai puțină hemoglobină și au mai puține celule roșii din sânge circulante decât în mod obișnuit, ceea ce duce la anemie ușoară sau severă. Talasemia va fi prezentă ca anemie microcitară. Thalassemia poate provoca complicații semnificative, incluzând supraîncărcarea cu fier, deformările osoase și afecțiunile cardiovasculare.
