În teoria relativității, dilatarea timpului este o diferență reală a timpului scurs între două evenimente, măsurată de observatori fie în mișcare relativ una față de cealaltă, fie diferită de masele gravitaționale. Un ceas precis în repaus cu privire la un observator poate fi măsurat pentru a bifa la o rată diferită în comparație cu ceasurile la fel de precise ale unui al doilea observator. Acest efect nu apare nici din aspectele tehnice ale ceasurilor, nici din faptul că semnalele au nevoie de timp pentru a se propaga, ci de natura spațiului în sine.
