Un telefon mobil preplătit este un telefon mobil pentru care se achiziționează un credit înainte de utilizarea serviciului. Creditul achiziționat este folosit pentru a plăti pentru serviciile de telefonie mobilă în punctul în care serviciul este accesat sau consumat. Dacă nu există un credit disponibil, accesul la serviciul solicitat este refuzat de rețeaua de telefonie mobilă. Utilizatorii pot să-și completeze creditul în orice moment utilizând o varietate de mecanisme de plată. Metoda alternativă de facturare este telefonul mobil post-plătit, în care un utilizator intră într-un acord de facturare pe termen lung sau scurt cu un operator de rețea mobilă sau cu un furnizor de servicii de transport. "Pay-as-you-go", "PAYG" și termeni similari sunt utilizați și pentru alte servicii ne-telefon plătite în același mod.
