Troțkiismul este teoria marxismului, așa cum susține Leon Trotsky. Troțki a fost identificat ca un marxist ortodox și bolșevic-leninist și a susținut înființarea unei partide de avangardă a clasei muncitoare. Politica lui se deosebea foarte mult de cele ale stalinismului, deoarece se opunea ideii socialismului într-o singură țară. Troțki continua să susțină internaționalismul proletar și o dictatură a proletariatului bazată pe auto-emanciparea muncii și pe democrația în masă. El nu a crezut în birocrația inactivă dezvoltată sub Stalin după moartea lui Lenin. Vladimir Lenin și Troțki au fost apropiați atât ideologic cât și personal în timpul Revoluției ruse și al urmașilor ei, iar unii îl numesc pe "co-lider" pe Troțki. Cu toate acestea, Lenin a criticat ideile lui Troțki și obiceiurile politice intra-partid. Troțki a fost liderul suprem al Armatei Roșii sovietice, în urma urmelor din perioada revoluționară. Troțki sa opus inițial anumitor aspecte ale leninismului. Mai târziu, el a concluzionat că unitatea dintre menșevici și bolșevici este imposibilă și sa alăturat bolșevicilor. Troțki a jucat un rol principal cu Lenin în revoluție.
