Un procesor de text este un dispozitiv electronic sau o aplicație software de calculator care, conform instrucțiunilor utilizatorului, efectuează procesarea de text: compoziția, editarea, formatarea și uneori imprimarea oricărui tip de material scris. Procesarea cuvintelor se poate referi și la tehnici avansate de stenografie, uneori folosite în contexte specializate, cu o mașină de scris special modificată. Termenul a fost creat la Laboratorul IBM din Böblingen, Germania de Vest din anii 1960. Caracteristicile tipice ale unui procesor de texte includ aplicația pentru fonturi, verificarea ortografică, verificarea gramaticii, tezaurul integrat, corecția automată a textului, integrarea pe Web și exportul HTML, printre altele. În forma sa cea mai simplă, un procesor de text este puțin mai mult decât o mașină de scris cu o scumpă mare, care ușurează corectarea greșelilor. Procesorul de texte a apărut ca o mașină de birou autonomă în anii 1970 și 1980, combinând funcțiile de introducere a textului cu tastatura și imprimarea unei mașini de scris electrice cu un procesor dedicat pentru editare de text.
