Zohar este lucrarea fundamentală în literatura despre gândirea mistică evreiască cunoscută sub numele de Kabbalah. Este un grup de cărți, care cuprind comentarii asupra aspectelor mistice ale Torei și ale interpretărilor scripturale, precum și despre misticism, cosmogonie mitică și psihologie mistică. Zohar conține o discuție despre natura lui Dumnezeu, originea și structura universului, natura sufletelor, răscumpărarea, relația Ego cu întunericul și "sinele adevărat" cu "Lumina lui Dumnezeu" și relația dintre "energie universală" și om. Exegeza sa scripturală poate fi considerată o formă esoterică a literaturii rabinice cunoscute sub numele de Midrash, care elaborează Tora. Zohar este în mare parte scris în ceea ce a fost descris ca un stil exaltat, excentric al aramaicului. Aramaic a fost limba de zi cu zi a lui Israel în cea de-a doua perioadă a Templului, a fost limba originală a unor mari secțiuni ale cărților biblice ale lui Daniel și Ezra și este limba principală a Talmudului. Zohar a apărut pentru prima dată în Spania în secolul al XIII-lea și a fost publicat de un scriitor evreu numit Moses de Leon.
