विशेष—(१) पुराणों के अनुसार जब भगीरथ गंगा को लेकर आ
रहे थे, तब जह्नु ऋषि मार्ग में यज्ञ कर रहे थे । गंगा के कारण
यज्ञ में विघ्न होने के भय से इन्होंने उनको पी लिया था ।
भगीरथ जो के बहुत प्रार्थना करने पर इन्होंने फिर गंगा को
कान से निकाल दिया था । तभी सें गंगा का नाम जह्नसुता,
जाह्नवी आदि पड़ा ।(२) इस शब्द के साथ कन्या, सुता, तनया
आदि पुत्रीवाचक शब्द लगाने से गंगा का अर्थ होता है ।
यौ०— जह्नुजा । जह्नुकन्या । जह्नुतनया । जह्नुलप्तमी ।
जह्नुसुता ।
