Steroli sau alcooli steroizi sunt un subset de steroizi și posedă o grupare hidroxil în poziția 3 a ciclului A. Lipidele amfipatice sintetizate din acetil coenzima A Molecula are o formă plană. Hidroxilul este în inelul A, molecula este apolia înapoi. Sterolii sunt importanți în fiziologia organismelor eucariote. Ele au loc în membrana celulară și reglează fluiditatea și funcția sa. Ei contribuie, de asemenea, la procesul de dezvoltare ca mesageri secundari. Diferitele organisme folosesc diferite steroli. Cele mai importante sunt colesterolul, fitosterolul și hormonii steroizi la animale, ergosterolul în ciuperci, campesterolul în plante, sitosterolul și stigmasterul.
