Перовскит представляет собой минеральный вид оксида кальция, состоящий из титаната кальция, с химической формулой CaTiO3. Минерал был обнаружен в Уральских горах России Густавом Роузом в 1839 году и назван в честь русского минералога Льва Перовского. Это дает свое название классу соединений, которые имеют тот же тип кристаллической структуры, что и CaTiO3, известный как структура перовскита. Кристаллическая структура перовскита была впервые описана В.М. Гольдшмидт в 1926 году, в своей работе по факторам толерантности. Кристаллическая структура была позже опубликована в 1945 году по данным рентгеновской дифракции на титанате бария ирландским кристаллографом Хелен Дик Мегау.
