Перекись представляет собой соединение, содержащее кислород-кислородную простую связь или пероксидный анион, O2- 2. Группа O-O называется пероксидной группой или пероксигруппой. Супероксиды, диоксигенилы, озоны и озониды рассматриваются отдельно. Пероксидные соединения можно грубо классифицировать на органические и неорганические. В то время как неорганические пероксиды имеют ионный, солевой характер, в органических пероксидах преобладают ковалентные связи. Кислородно-кислородная химическая связь пероксида нестабильна и легко расщепляется на реактивные радикалы посредством гомолитического расщепления. По этой причине пероксиды встречаются в природе только в небольших количествах, в воде, атмосфере, растениях и животных. Недавно было выделено образование пероксидных ионов в качестве одного из основных механизмов окисления оксидов в избытке кислорода в ионных кристаллах и может иметь большое влияние на ряд промышленных применений, включая твердооксидные топливные элементы. Пероксиды оказывают отбеливающее действие на органические вещества и поэтому добавляют к некоторым моющим средствам и красителям для волос.
