Bir permütasyon, kombinatoryal olarak nesnelerin belirli bir sırayla düzenlenmesidir. Bazı nesnelerin art arda oluşmasına izin verip vermeyeceğine bağlı olarak, tekrarlı bir permütasyondan veya tekrarlama olmaksızın bir permütasyondan bahsedilir. Tekrarlamasız permütasyonların sayısı fakülte olarak verilmekte, tekrarlı permütasyonların sayısı ise çok terimli katsayılarla verilmektedir. Grup teorisinde tekrar içermeyen bir permütasyon, genel olarak sonlu kümenin kendi kendine haritalandırmasıdır ve ilk doğal sayılar genellikle referans nicelik olarak kullanılır. İlk doğal sayıların permütasyon dizisi, ardıllığı bir bağ olarak derecenin simetrik grubunu oluşturur. Bu grubun nötr elemanı aynı permütasyona karşılık gelirken, ters eleman ters permütasyonudur. Simetrik grubun alt grupları, permütasyon gruplarıdır. Permütasyonların önemli anahtar değişkenleri, çevrimsel türü, sırası ve işaretidir.
