Aeronomy
Aeronomi, ayrışma ve iyonlaşmanın önemli olduğu atmosferin üst bölgesinin bilimidir. Aeronomi terimi Sydney Chapman tarafından Nature Editör'e 1946'da İsimlendirme Üzerine Bazı Düşünceler başlıklı bir mektupta sunulmuştur. Günümüzde bu terim aynı zamanda diğer gezegenlerin atmosferlerinin ilgili bölgelerinin bilgisini de içermektedir. Aeronomi, atmosferik fizik dallarından biridir. Aeronomide araştırma, atmosferin bu bölgesi hakkında değerli veriler sağlayan balonlara, uydulara ve sondaj roketlerine erişmeyi gerektirir. Atmosferik gelgitler, mezosfer ve düşük termal küre dinamiklerine hakimdir. Bu nedenle, atmosferik gelgitlerin anlaşılması atmosferi bir bütün olarak anlamak için gereklidir. İncelenen diğer olaylar, kırmızı renkli spritler, sprite halolar, mavi jetler ve elfler gibi üst atmosferik yıldırım düşürmeleridir.
