Psikolojide, sansasyon ve algı, görme, işitme, vestibüler ve ağrı duyuları gibi insan ve hayvan sistemlerinde duyumların işlenmesinin aşamalardır. Bu konunun içerdiği hareket sonrası efekt, renk tutarlılığı, işitsel yanılsamalar ve derinlik algısı gibi illüzyonların incelenmesi. Duyu, bir duyu organının reseptör hücrelerine bir uyaranın çarpmasıyla başlayan düşük seviyeli biyokimyasal ve nörolojik olayların işlevi. Bir uyarıcının temel özelliklerinin saptanmasıdır. Algılama, duyusal girdinin gerçek dünyadaki nedeni hakkında farkındalığı veya anlayışı temsil eden "düzgün mavi bir duvarlı görüyorum" gibi ifadelerde yansıtılan zihinsel süreç veya durumdur. Sansasyonun amacı algılama, algılamanın amacı çevrenin faydalı bilgileri oluşturmaktır. Başka bir deyişle, duyumlar, uyarıları çevreyle temsil etmek için duyuların işleyişinin ilk aşamalarındandır ve algı dünyadaki olayları ve nesneleri yorumlama konusunda daha yüksek bir beyin işlevidir.
