Arşiv, tarihsel kayıtların ya da bulundukları fiziksel yerin birikimidir. Arşivler, bir kişinin veya kuruluşun yaşamı boyunca birikmiş olan birincil kaynak belgeleri içerir ve o kişinin veya kuruluşun işlevini göstermeye devam eder. Profesyonel arşivciler ve tarihçiler genelde arşivleri doğal, zorunlu olarak yasal, ticari, idari veya sosyal faaliyetlerin bir ürünü olarak üretilen kayıtlar olarak algılarlar. Mecazi olarak "bir organizmanın salgısı" olarak tanımlanırlar ve belirli bir mesajı gelecek nesillere iletmek için bilinçli olarak yazılmış veya oluşturulmuş belgelerden ayırt edilirler. Genel olarak, arşivler kalıcı veya uzun süreli korunması için kalıcı kültürel, tarihsel veya kanıtlayıcı değerlerinin gerekçesiyle seçilen kayıtlardan oluşur.
