Bir ödev, sözleşmeler kanununda ve gayrimenkul kanununda benzer anlamlarla kullanılan bir terimdir. Her iki durumda da, bir tarafın (tahsis eden) sahip olduğu haklardan başka bir tarafa-devralanın haklarından devralmasını kapsar. Ödevin ayrıntıları, ek hak ve yükümlülükleri belirler. Tipik olarak, üçüncü şahıs, yüklenici ile bir sözleşme yapmaktadır ve sözleşme, fiilen, devralan kişiye devredilir. Örneğin, bir borçlu yerel bir bankadan para alır. Yerel banka bir ipotek belgesi alır ve daha sonra bu notu, bir borç karşılığında bir finansal kuruluşa aktarabilir ve böylelikle borçludan başka bir tüzel kişiye ödeme alma hakkını tayin edebilir.
