Atmosfer
Bir atmosfer, gezegeni çevreleyen veya vücudun yerçekimi tarafından yerinde tutulmuş yeterli kütleli diğer materyal gövdeyi çevreleyen bir gaz katmanıdır. Yer çekimi yüksekse ve atmosferin sıcaklığı düşükse bir atmosferin tutulması daha olasıdır. Çoğunlukla azot olan yeryüzü atmosferi, çoğu organizmanın solunum için kullanılan oksijeni ve bitkiler, algler ve siyanobakterler tarafından fotosentez için kullanılan karbondioksiti de içerir, ayrıca canlı organizmaları güneş morötesi radyasyonla genetik hasardan korur. Mevcut kompozisyonu, paleoatmosferin milyarlarca yıllık biyokimyasal modifikasyonunun canlı organizmalar tarafından üretildiği bir üründür. Yıldız atmosferi terimi, bir yıldızın dış bölgesini tanımlar ve tipik olarak opak fotosferden başlayarak dışa doğru olan kısmı içerir.
