Hayvanlardaki embriyonik gelişimin erken safhasında oluşan blastokoele denilen iç sıvı dolu bir oyuğu çevreleyen, blastomer olarak adlandırılan içi boş bir hücre küresi olan blastula ("Yunanlı βλαστός'dan (blastos)). Embriyo gelişimi, bir yumurtayı gübreleyen ve bir moral adı verilen hücrelerin topu haline gelmek için pek çok bölünmeye uğrayan bir zigota dönüştüren bir sperm ile başlar. Yalnızca blastokoel oluştuğunda, erken embriyo bir patlama olur. Patlama embriyo formunun germ tabakalarının bulunduğu gastrulanın oluşumundan önce gelir. Omurgalı bir patlamanın ortak özelliği, blastokoeli çevreleyen blastoderm olarak bilinen bir blastomer tabakasından oluşmasıdır. Memelerde blastula bir blastosist adı verilir. Blastosist, fetüsün kesin yapılarına ve ekstra embriyonik dokuları oluşturmaya devam eden trofoblasta neden olacak bir embriyoblast (veya iç hücre kütlesi) içerir.
