Bir kaktüs Caryophyllales sırası içinde Cactaceae bitki ailesinin bir üyesidir. "Kaktüs" kelimesi Latince vasıtasıyla, orijinal olarak kimliği kesin olmayan dikenli bir bitki için kullanılan Eski Yunan κάκτος kaynaklı türetilmiştir. Kuzey Amerika'nın batısındaki Patagonya'dan kuzeydeki Kanada batı bölgelerine kadar uzanan kaktüsler Amerika'da yaşıyor. Afrika ve Sri Lanka'da yetişen Rhipsalis baccifera hariç. Çoğu kaktüsler, en azından bir miktar kuraklığa maruz kalan yaşam alanlarında yaşar. Çoğu, dünya üzerindeki en kurak yerlerden biri olan Atacama Çölü'nde bile bulunabilen son derece kuru ortamlarda yaşıyor. Kaktüs su tasarrufu için birçok uyarlamayı gösterir.
