Kemotaksi, kimyasal teşvike tepki olarak bir organizmanın hareketi. Somatik hücreler, bakteriler ve diğer tek hücreli veya çok hücreli organizmalar, hareketlerini kendi çevrelerindeki belirli kimyasallara göre yönlendirir. Bakterilerin, yiyecek moleküllerinin en yüksek yoğunluğuna doğru yüzerek veya zehirlerden kaçmaları yoluyla gıdaları bulmaları önemlidir. Çok hücreli organizmalarda, kemotaksis, erken gelişim için ve sonrasında gelişim aşamalarında ve normal fonksiyonda kritik öneme sahiptir. Ek olarak, hayvanlarda kemotaksiye izin veren mekanizmaların kanser metastazı sırasında tahrip edilebileceği kabul edilmiştir. Pozitif kemotaksis, hareket söz konusu kimyasalın daha yüksek bir konsantrasyona doğru olması durumunda oluşur. Bununla birlikte, negatif kemotaksis hareket ters yönde ise oluşur. Kimyasal olarak istenen kinene kemokinesis denilebilir.
