Chemurgy, tarımsal hammaddelerden endüstriyel ürünler hazırlamakla ilgili uygulanan bir kimyanın bir dalıdır. "Kimura" kelimesi kimyager William J. Hale tarafından hazırlanmış ve 1934 tarihli The Farm Chemurgic adlı kitabında ilk kez yayımlanmıştı. Konsept, 20. yüzyılın ilk yıllarında oldukça gelişmişti. Örneğin, selülozlardan fırçalar ve sinema filmi de dahil olmak üzere bir dizi ürün yapılmıştır. 1920'lerden başlayarak, önde gelen bazı Amerikalı çiftçiler ve sanayi arasında daha yaygın bir bağlantıyı savunmaya başladı. Bunların arasında William J. Hale ve tarımsal gazeteci Wheeler McMillen vardı.
