Kolloid, mikroskopik olarak başka bir madde boyunca dağılmış bir maddedir. Dağılan faz parçacıkları yaklaşık 1 ila 1000 nanometre arasında bir çapa sahiptir. Bu tür parçacıklar optik bir mikroskopta kolayca görülebilir ancak daha küçük boyut aralığında ultra mikroskop veya elektron mikroskopu gerekli olabilir. Bu boyut aralığında dağılmış fazlı homojen karışımlar, koloidal aerosoller, koloidal emülsiyonlar, koloidal köpükler, koloidal dispersiyonlar veya hidrosoller olarak adlandırılabilir. Dağılmış fazdaki parçacıklar veya damlacıklar büyük oranda koloidde bulunan yüzey kimyasından etkilenir. Bazı kolloidler, kolondaki parçacıklar tarafından ışığın saçılması olan Tyndall etkisi nedeniyle yarı saydamdır. Diğer kolloidler opak veya hafif renkte olabilir. Kolloidal süspansiyonlar arayüz ve kolloid biliminin konusudur. Bu çalışma alanı İskoç bilim adamı Thomas Graham tarafından 1861 yılında tanıtıldı.
