Komünizm ilk önce Alman filozofu ve sosyal bilimci Karl Marx tarafından bilimsel bir teoriye dönüştürülmüş ve bu bilimsel yaklaşımın ortak anlayışı günümüzde genellikle Marksizm olarak adlandırılmıştır. Marksist anlayışta komünizm, sosyalizmin ekonomik ve sosyal ilerlemeleri ile kaçınılmaz olarak hayata geçecek olan insan toplumsal evriminin son noktasıdır.
