İki takson, mercan ve Hildenbrandiaceae, konsept bakımından sorumludur, ancak oluşumları arasındaki çarpıcı fark kavramaların homolog olmadığını gösterir. Benzer yapılar da mevcuttur: Kriptostomalar kavramaya benzer, ancak sadece kıllara sahip olmaktan farklıdır ve sterildir. Caecostomata, sadece Fucus distichus'ta bulunur; bu olgularda gelişme sırasında ostiole tıkanır.
