Manyetik çekirdekli bellek, 20 yıl boyunca rasgele erişimli bilgisayar belleğinin baskın şekli idi. Minik manyetik toroidleri kullanır, bunlar tellerin bilgiyi yazmak ve okumak için dişli olduğu iç kısımları kullanır. Her çekirdek bir bit bilgiyi temsil eder. Çekirdekler iki farklı şekilde mıknatıslanabilir ve çekirdekte saklanan bit, o çekirdeğin mıknatıslanma yönüne bağlı olarak sıfır veya birdir. Teller, tek bir damarın "bir" veya "sıfır" olarak ayarlanmasına ve mıknatıslanmasının değiştirilmesi için seçilen teller vasıtasıyla uygun elektrik akımı darbeleri göndererek izin verir. Çekirdeği okuma süreci çekirdeğin "sıfır" a sıfırlanmasına, dolayısıyla silinmesine neden olur. Buna yıkıcı okuma denir. Böyle bir belleğin genelde sadece çekirdek bellek veya gayri resmi çekirdek adı verilir. Çekirdek bellek, 1970'lerin sonuna kadar yarı iletken hafıza tarafından değiştirilmiş olsa da, hafızaya bazen "çekirdek" denir; özellikle bir sistem hatasından sonra bellek içeriğini kaydeden bir dosyaya genelde bir çekirdek dökümü denir.
