Müzikte, kontrpuan, harmonik olarak birbirine bağımlı olan ancak ritim ve konturda bağımsız olan sesler arasındaki ilişkidir. Klasik müziğin en çok Rönesans döneminde ve özellikle de Barok müzikte yaygın uygulama döneminde belirlendi. Terim Latin punctus contra punctum "point to point" anlamındadır.

In music, counterpoint is the relationship between voices that are interdependent harmonically and yet are independent in rhythm and contour. It has been most commonly identified in classical music, strongly developing during the Renaissance and in much of the common practice period, especially in Baroque music. The term originates from the Latin punctus contra punctum meaning "point against point".
