Sözcüğün en spesifik kullanımındaki para birimi, fiili kullanımda veya dolaşımdayken herhangi bir biçimde para alışverişi aracı olarak, özellikle kağıt para dolaşımı anlamına gelir. Bu kullanım, banknotlarla eşanlamlıdır veya bir hükümet tarafından para için kullanılan fiziksel belirteçleri ifade eden banknotlar ve madeni paralar ile eş anlamlıdır.
