Ptolemaic Mısır, Roma İmparatorluğu, Bizanslar, kısa bir süre Arap hilafetleri, Fransız Luzignan hanedanı ve Venedikliler tarafından yapılan sonraki kural, üç asırdan fazla Osmanlı kontrolü altındaydı.

Sözlükte yer alan Kıbrıs'ın tanımı E Akdeniz'de bir adadır: 1878 yılında Türkiye tarafından İngiltere'ye bırakılmış ve 1925 yılında bir koloni kurmuştur; 1960 yılında Commonwealth üyesi olarak bağımsız bir cumhuriyet haline geldi; Yunan destekli bir askeri darbenin ardından 1974'te Türkiye tarafından işgal edilerek adanın bölünmesine yol açtı. 1983'te Türk kontrolündeki kuzey sektörü kendisini Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti olarak bağımsız bir devlet olarak ilan etti, ancak uluslararası alanda tanınmayı başaramadı. BM'nin bir yeniden birleşme anlaşması yapmak için girişimleri başarısız oldu. Kıbrıs 2004'te AB'ye katıldı.
