Despotizm, tek bir varlığın mutlak güçle yönettiği bir hükümet biçimidir. Bu varlık bir otokrasideki gibi bir birey olabilir veya bir oligarşideki gibi bir grup olabilir. Despotizm sözcüğü "bir despot tarzında yönetmek" anlamına gelir ve mutlaka tek bir "despot", bir kişi gerektirmez. Despot kabaca "usta" veya "iktidar sahibi" anlamına gelen Yunan despotlarından gelir ve çok çeşitli başlıklar ve pozisyonları çevirmek için kullanılır. Bizans mahkemesinde Bizans imparatorlarının yöneticileri tarafından kullanılan soyluluk unvanı olarak istihdam edilen Mısır firavunlarının sınırsız gücünü ve otoritesini tanımlamak için kullanıldı ve Bizans İmparatorları unvanını aldı. Bu nedenle, despot'un tarihteki çeşitli zamanlarda farklı anlam ve yorumları olduğu ve tek bir tanımla tarif edilemediği bulunmuştur.
