Modern para politikasında devalüasyon, bu para biriminin değiştirilebileceği mallar, hizmetler veya diğer para birimlerine göre bir para biriminin değerinde bir azalmadır. 'Devalüasyon', bir ülkenin para biriminin sabit bir döviz kuru sistemi içerisinde değerinin düşürülmesi anlamına gelir ve bu sayede para otoritesi yabancı bir referans para birimine göre yeni bir sabit oran belirler. Buna karşılık, amortisman, hükümet veya merkez bankası politikaları değil, piyasa güçleri nedeniyle bir paranın değerinde bir düşüş olduğunu açıklamak için kullanılır. İkinci sistem uyarınca, merkez bankaları döviz alıp satarak oranları yukarı veya aşağı tutar; ancak genellikle USD değildir. Devalüasyonun tam tersi yeniden değerleme olarak adlandırılır. Amortisman ve devalüasyon bazen hatalı olarak birbirinin yerine kullanılır, ancak her zaman değerleri diğer para birimleri cinsinden ifade eder.
