Sosyolojide sapma, resmi olarak yürürlüğe konan kuralların yanı sıra toplumsal normların kayıt dışı ihlali de dahil olmak üzere, toplumsal normları ihlal eden eylemleri veya davranışları açıklar. Sosyologların, psikologların, psikiyatrların ve kriminologların, bu normların nasıl oluşturulduğunu, zamanla nasıl değiştiklerini ve nasıl uygulandığını incelemektedir. Normlar, toplum üyelerinin geleneksel olarak yönlendirildiği kurallar ve beklentilerdir. Deviance, bu normlara uygunluğun yokluğudur. Sosyal normlar kültürden kültüre farklılık gösterir. Örneğin, sapkın bir hareket, bir toplulukta sosyal normları bozan ancak başka bir toplum için normal olabilir.
