An album is such a personal thing. It's something I always wanted to do. It's me doing me, singing as me.
I like to go to Africa purely with something to do. I'm not very comfortable getting into an armor-plated Land Rover and going to see things, with my hand gel, you know, it's not me at all. You definitely have to be focused at certain times in your life and in your career, but at the end of the day, there's only so much you can do. Then you just have to chock it up to fate.
Fortunately, I've never been very conscious and inhibited of what I have to do. The camera's my soul mate.
By the time I was 30, nobody would work with me. I was friendless, I was hopeless, I was suicidal, lost my family - I mean, it was bad. Bottomed out, didn't know what I was going to do. I actually thought I was going to be a chef - go to work in a kitchen someplace.
This is all new to me, these re-releases. I don't know how these things do. I don't know if it will be people who saw it originally or young people.
I don't like getting older, but there's nothing I can do. Hitting 60 wasn't great, but I think I was lucky in not being that beautiful; it can be really cruel on people who have been stunning.
For me, I'm focused on what I want to do. I know what I need to do to be a champion, so I'm working on it.
