Sitoplazma, sitoplazmayı (hücre zarı içine alınan jel benzeri madde) ve organelleri - hücrenin iç alt yapılarını içerir. Prokaryot organizmaların hücrelerinin tüm içeriği sitoplazmada bulunur. Ökaryot organizmaların hücrelerinde hücre çekirdeğinin içeriği sitoplazmadan ayrılır ve daha sonra nukleoplazma olarak adlandırılır. Sitoplazma yaklaşık% 80 su ve genellikle renksizdir. Çoğu hücresel aktivitenin gerçekleştiği sitoplazma içinde, glikoliz dahil birçok metabolik yol ve hücre bölünmesi gibi işlemler bulunur.
