Fable edebi bir türe ait. Bir masal hayvanlar, efsanevi canlılar, bitkiler, cansız nesneler veya doğa güçleri olan ve insan vücudu biçiminde olan ve manevi bir dersin bir yorumuna yol açan ahlaklı bir dersin yorumlanmasına yol açan nesir ya da ayette kısaca kurgusal bir hikayedir açıkça bir kısmi maksim eklenebilir. Bir masal, hayvanlar, bitkiler, cansız cisimler ve doğa güçlerini insanlığın konuşmasını ve diğer güçlerini üstlenen aktörler olarak dışladığı için bir şeytan ile benzetilebilir.
