Geri bildirim, geçmişle veya bugünle ilgili bilgilerin, mevcut veya gelecekte aynı fenomeni etkilediği bir süreçtir. Bir devre veya halka oluşturan neden-sonuç zincirinin bir parçası olarak, olayın kendisine "geri beslendiği" söylenir. Geri besleme aynı zamanda aşağıdakilerin eşanlamlıdır: ▪ Geri bildirim sinyali - ilgilenilen parametrenin gerçek seviyesinin ölçümü. ▪ Geri bildirim mekanizması - boşluğu daha sonra değiştirmek için kullanılan işlem veya araçlar. ▪ Geri bildirim döngüsü - boşluğun ilk tespit edilmesinden boşluğun müteakip modifikasyonuna kadar yol açan nedensel yol.

Sözlüğün geri bildiriminin ilk tanımı, bir elektronik devrenin, cihazın veya mekanik sistemin çıktısının bir kısmının girişine geri döndürülmesidir ve böylece özelliklerini değiştirir. Negatif geribildirimde, çıkış enerjisindeki bir artış girdi enerjisini azaltır; pozitif geribildirimde, çıkış enerjisindeki bir artış girdi enerjisini güçlendirir. Geri beslemenin diğer tanımı, çıkışa geri beslenen çıkış sinyalinin bir parçası olmasıdır.
